Alex comes from a family who have always been in hospitality. Alex took over the family business in 2000 which comprised of 24 self catering apartments in St Helier. In 2003 this was sold and Alex married her husband Jon and took some time out to raise her 3 children.
Naturally friendly, outgoing, organised and entrepreneurial, Alex started wanting to use her qualifications and experience in hospitality skills once more. She started keeping a look out for opportunities and, as happens at times like this, very soon came across the perfect business!
“One day, I was driving down Market Hill in St Aubin, when I noticed The Porthole Cottage guest house, its adjoining cottage and lovely, large gardens. I fell in love with it and couldn’t wait to find out more about it! It was tired and run down but I could see its exciting potential right away.”
Alex made inquiries to purchase the freehold of this tired and run down guest house and, by way of the couple selling their home, agreeing a loan, and Jon staying at work, they were able to purchase Porthole Cottage.
Builder Paul Sowney and his team moved in as the last guest left in October 2013, and helped Porthole Suites open in May 2014 – a month earlier than anticipated. They worked to Alex’s concept and helped her create 10 beautifully appointed self-catering suites just a minute’s walk from the pretty and bustling village of St Aubin.

I like to make sure our guests are well looked after and that they really enjoy their stay – to this end, they can just pick up the phone in reception to get through to me and I can answer their questions and help out if needed. Porthole Suites encompasses 10 individual self-catering Suites in the pretty harbour village of St Aubin in Channel Island of Jersey or ‘La Reine de la Manche’ (The Queen of the Channel).
You’ll find us tucked away in a quiet road, yet really close to the hub of the vibrant village – it’s about 30 seconds’ walk away 🙂 We’ll be honest here and say it may take you closer to one minute to get as far as the harbour (turn right at the bottom of the road) or Railway Walk (where there are also bicycles for hire – just turn left instead)!

Although there are ample top class eateries in St Aubin, we appreciate you may also want to cook ‘at home’, so we have supplied you with light cooking facilities. There is a small but well-stocked supermarket and a delicatessen just 150m/yds down the road, where you can get what you need, and are larger supermarkets just 5-10 minutes’ drive away (and on the bus routes). There is a launderette just off the end of our road.
