May Day Events in Jersey

boat show 2016You’ll find even more things to do in Jersey than usual this weekend. We’ve seen more early-season visitors this year than we have for many years, with the early Easter probably helping those figures, but May Day events in Jersey are when we usually see the biggest attendances of the year so far. This is despite the many competing attractions for visitors and locals of all ages.

The biggest crowds will undoubtedly turn out for one of Jersey’s biggest annual events, the Barclays Jersey Boat Show. This runs from Saturday 3oth April to Monday 2nd May and it’s well worth making the effort to see. There will be a lot more than boats on show and, along with plentiful and varied food and drink outlets, artisan products, marine and lifestyle stalls, you’ll find loads to entertain you, including paddle boat racing. It takes place in and around the marina and Weighbridge Place (just across the road).

Admission to the Boat Show is free.

For a quieter time with (probably) smaller crowds, St Helier Parish has a traditional May Day celebration in Marina Gardens on Sunday, between 10am and midday, including dancing around the maypole. They also promise cupcakes, Jersey Wonders (yum!) and a lucky dip for children.

For something quieter but a little more strenuous, why not join local guide Arthur Lamy on one of his Sunday Cycle rides around Jersey’s green lanes, this time celebrating the opening of Jersey’s new National Park? Details from Arthur (a Blue Badge Guide) on 01534 853525, or email him at arthur@arthurthebluebadgeguide.com.

The cost is £15 and you’ll need a bike, but remember you can hire these locally.

There are loads more May Day events in Jersey and plenty of things going on before and after the weekend, of course.

Keep your eyes peeled for other events and please tell us what you’ve seen or done in Jersey that you’ve particularly enjoyed, so we can pass it on. Thanks!
